Pensions
Information and updates about the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).
Overview
UCU negotiates nationally on behalf of members of USS. However, we do not run any pensions schemes, we do not have any information on individual members’ pension entitlements, and we are unable to provide financial advice.
The USS pension scheme covers all University of Sheffield staff on grade 6 and above. Currently a hybrid scheme consisting of a secure, ‘defined benefit’ arrangement and a ‘defined contribution’ part over that threshold, the scheme must undergo a statutory valuation every three years.
Report on 2026 USS pensions scheme valuation process
Representatives from Sheffield UCU have been taking part in the University Valuation Group (UVG) to discuss the position of the University and the campus trade unions in relation to the ongoing USS pensions scheme valuation, which started in March 2026 and is expected to be completed by July 2027.
There is no contentious issue that has emerged as of yet during this valuation round. We also have very good ideological similarity with the UoS’s management stance and expect frictionless agreements/discussions over the course of consultation. You can read the full branch report below:
